You better get skin and stomach prepared - a summer in Cordoba is all about getting sunburned, spending the afternoon around the many rivers or waterfalls, drinking „Mate tea“ with friends, grilling a goat, a sheep, a cow or whatever fits on the grill and then swallow it all down with Fernet-Cola - I know that mixture sounds weird but it can get really tasty after the second glass :)
Cordoba city is the second biggest city in Argentina and lies around 700 km inland from Buenos Aires. Although that Cordoba is a vibrant student city with a great nightlife scene, I rather recommend to visit in a different season as temperatures rise to an unbearable level in summer. So, with your swimsuit and the grill on hand, you better reach out to the small villages and hidden places around Cordoba city.
Let´s start nice and small. „San Marcos“ has no asphalted streets but a lot of wild horses, a beautiful river embedded right in a mountain scenery and is entirely occupied by dogs and „hippies“.
Here everything seems to be handmade from clothes over jewelry, wine, olive oil, honey and nearly all you can eat to pottery and furniture. In the evening the city square comes to life when people are meeting up to drink „Mate“ and play music or hang out with their children on the playground. The tourist information nearby will help you to find a hostel and provide you with the surprisingly rich event schedule of town. Each weekend in summer the city offers a cabaret/circus show in the Amphitheater built right into the woods which always is announced to start at 22h but really starts at 24h o´clock.
Capilla del Monte is THE alien city of Cordoba and you can´t leave without eating alien pie, take a photo with an alien or an UFO and listen to some of the alien encounters some people already had. If you are not a believer you can become one in going on a guided weekend trip up into the mountains to search for lights and UFOs in the night sky...just be careful that you don´t get kidnapped by aliens.
Villa Carlos Paz is for Argentinians what Mallorca is for Europeans. If you are a party animal you are in the right place. In summer it can get really full as all the stars and starlets from the Argentinian TV come here to play comedy shows or sing in one of the many theaters they have around town. The restaurants in the town center are constantly busy, the streets full of activities and the rivers overloaded with people enjoying their holidays.
If you search for peace and quiet instead than your are right at Cuesta Blanca where loud music is considered to be environmental pollution. Just 10 km of Villa Carlos Paz you can enjoy nature as its best with peach trees and sandy beaches along the river
You have enough of the rivers around? Then come to the "Siete Cascadas" waterfalls in "La Falda" and dangle your feet in the cold water of the falls. We have been there in April and we were nearly on our own there but I heard that in the summer months (January, Feburary) it can get really crowded with people so try visiting during the week.
Villa General Belgrano is a German enclave in Argentina and although rather small it´s very popular among the Argentinians. Rather funny to see is what the former immigrants and time have made out of this place.
On main street you pass by the cake shop "süß" and the restaurant "Hans & Franz" where you can eat mainly sausages. Gotten thirsty you can drink a liter of beer in the "Old Munich" restaurant right next to a statue of the Bear of Berlin and a timbered house where the town hall is located. Of course the Octoberfest isn´t missing. I had the feeling of being in "Disneyland" rather than in a real town but nevertheless had a funny experience...and from time to time you actually can hear people talking in German.
