The Iguazú Falls are one of the most impressing waterfalls on earth and surely worth visiting although a little bit remote. They are located in the triple frontier of Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay. Although that the biggest part lies within the Argentinian territory, the Brazilian part is also worth seeing.
We passed the zone on our journey from Argentina to Brazil by car but as the "Cataratas" have two international airports one on the Brazilian and one on the Argentinian side, it makes it an option for a 3 days trip from Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro or Sao Paulo, as well. The word "Iguazú" by the way comes from the Guarani language and means something like "big water" - which they are in fact.
The Argentinian side
I like the Argentinian side better, sorry, even the city "Puerto de Iguazú" is much nicer than it´s Brazilian counterpart. On top I´m married to an Argentinian so what do you want me to say :)
It´s definitely the fun side because you get much closer to the falls. You directly walk over bridges close to the water surrounded with butterflies, constantly accompanied with fine rain, until the most profound part the "Garganta del Diablo" the biggest fall who crushes more than 80m into the depth. If you want you can do a boat ride on the river "Iguazú" which will get you close to the falls and soaking wet as well, but actually that can be highly welcomed in summer when temperatures rise around 35 degrees celsius.
The Brazilian side
That´s more the picture postcard tour. You see the falls from the other side of the river where it allows you to take beautiful pictures of the whole scenery. You won´t get wet until you reach the end of the path where you have the possibility to see the "Garganta del Diablo“ from a bridge in the middle of the falls, which is by the way - awesome!!
Be wise and bring a waterproof camera or invent something to wrap around your camera to protect it as, depending on the wind, it will get wet. For those among us who can afford it, take a helicopter ride and enjoy the falls from high above.
Good to know:
On your way you will always see signs which warn you from the "Coatí" who walk around freely in that zone - well, TAKE THEM SERIOUSLY.
These animals are a 100% professional and know exactly what they do. As they have really sharp claws you better back off once they got your bag or food. But don´t worry you will be fine just make sure to never leave things on the floor which contain food even if they are closed.
